Moo Sa Sool

Moo Sa Sool is the
martial art of weaponry and is also known as the
"Martial Art of the Warrior". Moo Sa Sool provides
an integrated approach to the cultivation of the
mind, body, and spirit. Moo Sa Sool's structures
are made up of 20% unarmed techniques and 80% armed
techniques. Moo Sa Sool consists of 18 different
weapons and forms. Not only can the practitioner
draw on the ancient classical weapons, but most
everyday objects become effective weapons with
proper instruction. The practitioner will learn to
apply normal everyday objects such as umbrella,
canes, bags, belts, key chains, newspaper and even
coins in techniques that are well balanced
offensively as well as defensively.
Moo Sa Sool is rooted
in Korea from the combat warriors called the "Hwarang"
(Flowers of Youth) in the Soo Bak Ki system of
martial arts which included Moo Sa Sool, Hap Ki Do
and Tae Kwon Do. These warriors were from the Silla
Kingdom in ancient Korea. One soldier of the
Hwarang was said to be worth ten of any other of the
two warring Kingdoms of Bak Jae and Ko Goo Ryu.
This was mainly because of their skill in Moo Sa
Sool. The Hwarang endured a grueling regiment of
training in Soo Bak Ki, which included Moo Sa Sool,
and was directly responsible for Silla's utter
dominance. Unfortunately, this art was
discontinued because of the Japanese occupation of
Korea. Occupying forces feared the awesome power of
Moo Sa Sool and prohibited any weapons or training
in Korea. Few martial artist possessed the skills
of this art, but a few managed to keep it secretly
alive. Grand Master Edward (K.S.) Song restructured
and reintroduced this art of Moo Sa Sool under the
guidance and in honor of his ancestors who would not
let it die away.
